SWEDEN
I’ve got this organized into different sections, so scroll down to find: about town (Lund); campus radio (3 short audio files I made); countryside in Skåne; University guest house; neighborhood around guest house; Kyrkhult, Blekinge (Grandpa Holmquist story); Stockholm; central Sweden; Malmö; Ystad; the island Ven; and the famous church at Dalby.
Lund
old cathedral church
In this cathedral, which was consecrated in 1045, there is an astronomical clock built in 1380! Here’s a foto of that clock and a video clip of it performing (which it does every day at 12:00pm and 3:00pm).
below is the video clip – 0’57”

joesworld.us goes to Kyrkhult, Blekinge
Kyrkhult is a town located in Blekinge county, Sweden. This is the town from which Alfred Carl Holmquist (Joe’s paternal grandfather) emigrated as a 7-year-old in 1885 with other members of his family. Aunt Ruth Madson interviewed A.C. in 1967, and it is this text that lead Joe to Blekinge. A link to that interview with A.C.Holmquist can be found at the end of this section. The text mentioned the town name, general information about the location of the farm where they lived, and location of the bakery where A.C.’s father worked. The area around Kyrkhult looks like Brainerd, Minnesota. Back in the 19th century, the area would have been mostly cleared for grazing and planting.

Götta Canal
In the mid-19th C. the Swedes were tired of pirates preying on their shipping lanes, so they made a canal running east-west to end the problem. Cycling along the canal is fun – pretty and no hills!

Ven was the home of the famous astronomer Tycho Brahe

Ven is small. When you get there, first thing you do is rent a bike and cruise the countryside.

After visiting the church, it’s a good idea to head over to Egino’s pub for a libation.
